One starts the day you take delivery. The other started years earlier, with the first owner. Same badge on the windscreen, and the listing rarely tells you which you're looking at.
Lincoln certifies at two levels. Signature carries six years or 100,000 miles of comprehensive coverage — measured from the day the car was first sold new, not from your purchase. The clock started with the first owner, which means two Signature-certified Lincolns on the same lot at the same price can carry wildly different amounts of remaining warranty.
Select works completely differently: twelve months or 12,000 miles from the day you buy it. Both wear a "certified" badge. They are not the same product, and the listing doesn't always tell you which one you're looking at.

What Certification Actually Is
The warranty is the proof, not the product
Lincoln doesn't attach years of coverage to a car it hasn't been through properly. Certification is the inspection and the reconditioning — the warranty is what Lincoln is willing to guarantee afterwards.
Before a vehicle can be certified it has to clear eligibility on age and mileage, then a factory-trained technician works through it: exterior, interior, underhood, underbody. Two hundred points for Signature, 139 for Select. Anything that fails is repaired or replaced with factory-authorised parts before the car goes on sale — not noted on a sheet for the buyer to deal with later.
A CARFAX vehicle history report is run as part of the process, screening for accident history and frame, flood and fire damage. A car with the wrong history doesn't get certified at all, regardless of how it presents on the lot.
It has to qualify first
Age and mileage limits rule vehicles out before anyone opens the bonnet. Not every pre-owned Lincoln is eligible, and most used cars on any lot never could be.
Failed parts get replaced, not disclosed
Anything that doesn't pass is repaired or replaced with factory-authorised parts as a condition of certification. That's the difference between an inspection report and a reconditioned car.
The history is screened
A CARFAX report is run during certification, checking accident history along with frame, flood and fire damage. Ask to see it — it exists, and you shouldn't have to push.
Then Lincoln stands behind it
Only after all of that does the warranty attach. Which is the point: the coverage isn't a sales add-on, it's Lincoln putting its own money behind the inspection.

The Part That Matters
Where the six years actually goes
This is how Signature certification works. A new Lincoln comes with four years or 50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage; Signature extends that to six years or 100,000 miles, measured from the same starting point.

Proportions shown are illustrative. Remaining coverage depends entirely on the original in-service date and the odometer, and the 100,000-mile limit can be reached before the six years are up. Ask for the in-service date on any specific vehicle.
The practical consequence: a two-year-old Signature vehicle with four years of coverage still to run and a five-year-old one with months left are not comparable purchases, even at similar prices. The badge looks identical on both.
Select doesn't work this way at all. Its twelve months start when you take delivery, so a Select vehicle's age doesn't erode your coverage — but you get one year rather than the remainder of six. Which tier suits you depends on how long you plan to keep it.

Lincoln certifies at two levels with different eligibility and different inspections. Most dealer pages blur them into a single "certified" claim. They aren't the same thing, and listings don't always say which one applies.

Standard on every Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, either tier. Worth knowing before a first warranty visit, and worth asking about anywhere else you shop — deductibles vary a lot between manufacturer CPO programmes.

Lincoln's term for it is a Comprehensive Limited Warranty, and both halves of that name matter. Comprehensive describes the scope — broad component coverage, as distinct from powertrain-only cover, which is limited to engine, transmission and drivetrain. Limited is the legal term meaning the warranty carries defined exclusions rather than covering everything unconditionally. Nearly every vehicle warranty sold is a limited warranty.
So it isn't a lesser tier of coverage — the two words describe different things. In practice it means parts and labour on covered components, excluding wear items like brake pads, wiper blades and tyres. That's standard across manufacturer CPO programmes and it's the part people most often assume otherwise.
Optional on top of either tier: Lincoln Protect Extended Service Plans, including PremiumCARE, extend coverage beyond the standard term, and a Vehicle Scheduled Maintenance Plan covers routine service. Both are priced per vehicle and neither is part of standard certification, regardless of how a listing is worded.
Before You Compare Prices
Four questions worth asking
On any certified Lincoln, at any dealer. The answers change what the vehicle is worth more than the mileage does.
- What was the original in-service date? This is the one that matters. It tells you exactly when coverage ends, and it's the only way to compare two certified vehicles honestly.
- Signature or Select? This decides your warranty entirely — the remainder of six years from the original sale date, or twelve months from today. Ask before anything else about price.
- What came up on the inspection? Items that failed were repaired or replaced. Knowing which ones tells you something about how the car was treated.
- Can I see the CARFAX? It was run during certification, so it exists. Any dealer should hand it over without being pressed.

Is a certified Lincoln actually more reliable than a normal used one?
It's been through more before it reached the lot. Certification requires a vehicle to clear age and mileage limits, pass a 200-point or 139-point inspection by a factory-trained technician across exterior, interior, underhood and underbody, and have anything that failed repaired or replaced with factory-authorised parts. A CARFAX report screens accident history and frame, flood and fire damage. None of that guarantees a car will never need anything — but it's a materially different starting point from a used vehicle that was cleaned and priced.
When does the Lincoln CPO warranty start?
It depends on the tier. Signature coverage runs from the original new-vehicle warranty start date, not from your purchase — so six years on a car first sold new in March 2023 ends in March 2029, whoever owns it in between. Select coverage runs twelve months from the day you buy it. This is why two certified Lincolns at the same price can be very different buys.

Is there a deductible on the Lincoln CPO warranty?
Yes. Every Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned vehicle carries a standard $100 deductible, on either tier. It applies per visit for covered repairs.

Ask which tier it is and what the original in-service date was before comparing certified vehicles on price — those two answers do more work than anything else on the window sticker.
